Iceland, School and a Big Crazy Change – August 2025

If you haven’t heard… me and my partner, Rheann, have gone and done something exceptionally crazy.

… We have moved to Iceland.

International Travel is hard

For those now in the know, life has gotten rough for many of us, but particularly for Rheann and I for a while. We knew we needed a change and searched for an answer. I had been to Iceland three years ago as a member of the Snorri Program, which brings western Icelanders back to Iceland to experience the homeland.

Then I saw, during a period that felt like total rock bottom, that the University of Iceland offers a Master’s Program called “Viking and Medieval Norse Studies.” Which I applied for and slowly waited/prepared for this move. The last eight months have been some of the hardest of my entire life. When I had thought I’d reached a level of stability and personal progress, the rug was torn out beneath me time and time again.

Now, we live in Iceland and I begin school this week.

I couldn’t have done this without my immense and incredibly supportive community. From my parents, siblings, close friends, collogues in Winnipeg, to all the crazy Viking Reenactors from across Western Canada, and now the community of new and old friends in Iceland. Every achievement me and Rheann make is a group achievement. NONE of this could have happened without our village around us.

I am going to make an effort to blog every two weeks or so, depending on school and other activities. I will be sharing much of what I learn in my program that I feel is relevant for Viking Reenactment and my writing career. I will also share our rambling stores of adaption and new experiences.

Thank you everyone. I try every day to share my appreciation and love to everyone who helped make this happen.

Saying goodbye to our doggy Claire, who is now staying with my parents, was one of the hardest parts of this experience.
